In his decision, Judge Weinstein noted that the FDNY gave affected firefighters “an objectionable ‘take it or leave it’ proposition: shave down to the skin with a razor and risk permanent injury or be reassigned to light duty. Their job and the safety of the public were more paramount to their own legal rights.” “Some would suffer gashes, but they accepted disfigurement and the irritations that come with their conditions so they could be reinstated. “They were forced to cut their own faces,” their attorney said. “There was no empathy toward the situation at all,” he said.Īboushi, who is also a candidate in the upcoming race for Manhattan District Attorney, said her clients agreed to shave in order to return to full duty. I ended up telling them, ‘If you ask me to shave again I’m going to have to go on a medical leave because my skin is going to be irritated and start bleeding.’ “I was relieved of duty just five days ago because I was asked to shave four times in one day because of my condition,” Joseph explained. “I’m glad we could level the playing field.”įirefighter Joseph said he and his co-plaintiffs were unable to do overtime because of the shaving requirements and routinely had to take medical leave. Let’s start with a quick introduction of you and your yurt. We run a couple of successful YouTube channels. What inspired you to pursue an off the grid yurt lifestyle? And we live in a 30 foot Pacific Yurt located on North Vancouver Island. Jake : I traveled throughout China and Mongolia when I was 21 years old. While in the grasslands of Mongolia, I stayed in a traditional Mongolian Yurt – it was an amazing experience! I remember loving the design and feeling of warmth and comfort that the yurt gave me while I was wrapped in wool blankets safe inside that Mongolian Yurt. Nicole and I also enjoy watching YouTube videos of families and couples who build and live in unique housing. What made Pacific Yurts standout over other structures or companies on the market? We relished the chance to design our own yurt interior, so we thought a Pacific Yurt would be the perfect dwelling for our move to raw forested property in Canada! Many of the families we saw living in Yurts had these amazing living spaces that looked comfortable and quite beautiful. Jake: We researched about 10 other yurt companies before choosing Pacific Yurts. We kept coming back to their yurts because they looked very clean, resilient, and mindfully designed around the structure’s traditions, but with added modern features. We were also impressed by Pacific Yurts’ professional social media pages, which allowed us to see a wide variety of ways their yurts were built and lived in among hundreds of different settings. #LIVING OFF GRID JAKE AND NICOLE PROFESSIONAL# We loved being able to use the Pacific Yurts 3D Yurt Builder on their website to customize a yurt and see what ours would look like!įinally, of all the companies we looked at, Pacific Yurts was the most helpful and responsive to our questions and our ideas when we communicated with them over email or by phone. We just knew their helpfulness and professionalism with our situation would carry over into their yurt design!Ĭan you talk about the assembly process and what that’s been like? Nicole: The assembly process had its moments. I would say the most challenging part was building the yurt platform. In fact, it took us a lot longer to finish the platform because we were building the platform over three feet high on very uneven ground. However, when we started to put the Yurt together, it was a blast. Unwrapping each piece was like opening a Christmas present for us. Seeing the French doors, the glass windows, the frames for the windows and the dome brought tears to my eyes. What’s it like living in an off the grid yurt? #LIVING OFF GRID JAKE AND NICOLE WINDOWS# Jake: It’s been a fun and challenging adventure! Our property can only be accessed by boat, so our materials had to be barged over to us. We also had to cut our way into our land and clear a spot for the yurt because our property was so heavily forested and raw. After clearing the space, we built the platform and assembled the yurt in about a month–despite the snow, rain, black flies, and mosquitos attempting to stop us! Once the platform was finished, we waited for a stretch of sunny weather to happen, which let us put up our yurt in just three days. I must say, Nicole really enjoyed the process of putting up the yurt because it went by so fast. It also made us feel very accomplished, and we found the structure itself to be designed so mindfully. We felt so much accomplishment and joy when we were able to sleep in our new yurt on night one! Nicole: We genuinely love the look of the Yurt! Our living space has such a relaxing and geometric look to it. And the ring, dome and rafters remind me of the sun putting off rays of sunshine. The Yurt allows us to hear the sounds of nature that surround us while keeping us mosquito and bug-free. #LIVING OFF GRID JAKE AND NICOLE WINDOWS#.#LIVING OFF GRID JAKE AND NICOLE SERIES#.#LIVING OFF GRID JAKE AND NICOLE PROFESSIONAL#.
Achieving health equity requires valuing everyone equally with focused and ongoing societal efforts to address avoidable inequalities, historical and contemporary injustices, and the elimination of health and health care disparities ( 23). Health equity is attainment of the highest level of health for all people. “Health equity” or “equity in health” implies that ideally everyone should have a fair opportunity to attain their full health potential and that no one should be disadvantaged from achieving this potential ( 24). Health disparities adversely affect groups of people who have systematically experienced greater obstacles to health based on their racial or ethnic group religion socioeconomic status sex age mental health cognitive, sensory, or physical disability sexual orientation or gender identity geographic location or other characteristics historically linked to discrimination or exclusion ( 16).Įquity is the absence of avoidable, unfair, or remediable differences among groups of people, whether those groups are defined socially, economically, demographically, or geographically or by other means of stratification. Definitions of Health Disparities, Health Equity, and SDOHĪ particular type of health difference that is closely linked with social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage. This review concludes with recommendations for linkages across health care and community sectors from national advisory committees, recommendations for diabetes research, and recommendations for research to inform practice. The literature review focuses primarily on U.S.-based studies of adults with diabetes and on five SDOH: socioeconomic status (education, income, occupation) neighborhood and physical environment (housing, built environment, toxic environmental exposures) food environment (food insecurity, food access) health care (access, affordability, quality) and social context (social cohesion, social capital, social support). This article begins with an overview of key definitions and SDOH frameworks. Toward the goal ofunderstanding and advancing opportunities for health improvement among the population with diabetes through addressing SDOH, ADA convened the current SDOH and diabetes writing committee, prepandemic, to review the literature on 1) associations of SDOH with diabetes risk and outcomes and 2) impact of interventions targeting amelioration of SDOH on diabetes outcomes. In 2013, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) published a scientific statement on socioecological determinants of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes ( 15). In diabetes, understanding and mitigating the impact of SDOH are priorities due to disease prevalence, economic costs, and disproportionate population burden ( 12– 14). In the wake of concurrent pandemic and racial injustice events in the U.S., the American College of Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, Society of General Internal Medicine, National Academy of Medicine, and other professional organizations have published statements on SDOH ( 5– 8), and calls to action focus on amelioration of these determinants at individual, organizational, and policy levels ( 9– 11). Most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted unequal vulnerabilities borne by racial and ethnic minority groups and by disadvantaged communities. With a health care shift toward greater emphasis on population health outcomes and value-based care, social determinants of health (SDOH) have risen to the forefront as essential intervention targets to achieve health equity ( 2– 4). disproportionately, with relatively intractable patterns seen in these populations’ higher risk of diabetes and rates of diabetes complications and mortality ( 1). Decades of research have demonstrated that diabetes affects racial and ethnic minority and low-income adult populations in the U.S. |
